Warnock admits severing ties with Blades chief
Neil Warnock takes QPR into a clash against his beloved Sheffield United tomorrow night confessing he and Blades plc chairman Kevin McCabe no longer speak.
The long-time pals fell out after Warnock’s acrimonious exit as Bramall Lane boss four years ago.
They have not exchanged a word since the Carlos Tevez scandal cost United their Premier League status.
Warnock, 62, and McCabe went their separate ways after crucial goals by the then not properly registered Tevez kept West Ham in the top flight at United’s expense.
But their parting was far from sweet with insinuations Warnock had taken the club as far as he could after eight years, and hints United needed a bigger name.
Warnock, now QPR boss and on the brink of equalling the record of Dave Bassett and Graham Taylor by winning a seventh promotion as a manager, said: “The comments he made on my departure hurt me a lot. He knows now on reflection that he should have bitten his tongue.
“We were great friends for 17 or 18 years with a shared dream for Sheffield United.
“But I knew he wanted to bring in a big name and, at the time, I thought I should go for the fans’ sake.
“I am proud of what we achieved, but the things said are my motivation. That is why I’m where I am today.”
